State Law Check

Effective 2026-11-04. The Service was renamed from Legal to Ship (legaltoship.com) to State Law Check (statelawcheck.com); nothing else in these terms changed.

Terms of Service

These terms cover the State Law Check website at statelawcheck.com, the State Law Check API and the State Law Check Shopify app (together, the "Service"). "We" and "us" means the operator of State Law Check. "You" means the person or company using the Service.

By using the Service, creating an account, using an API key or installing the Shopify app, you agree to these terms. If you are using the Service for a company, you confirm you can bind that company to them.

1. What the Service is

State Law Check tells you whether federal, state and carrier rules restrict shipping a product to a destination, and points to the law behind each answer. It covers knives, self-defense products, ammunition and firearm parts, vapes, alcohol, hemp and CBD, kratom, fireworks, batteries, cosmetic ingredients and other product groups listed on our coverage page.

The Service is information, not legal advice. Using it does not create an attorney-client relationship. We are not your lawyer, and nothing in the Service is a legal opinion about your products or your business.

Draft rules are applied. Our rules are written from the official text of statutes, regulations and carrier policies. A rule that has not yet been reviewed by a lawyer is a "draft", and every answer says whether it rests on one (basis "draft" or "reviewed"). Draft rules are applied by default, in the API, the website, the storefront widget and the Shopify app: they can block a checkout, require an age check or limit quantities. Draft rules may misread the law, miss exceptions, or apply conditions that don't fit your product. You can choose reviewed rules only ("includeDrafts": false in the API, or the setting in the Shopify app); draft restrictions are then not applied at all, which can let through sales a draft rule would have stopped.

No accuracy guarantee. We work to keep every rule correct, but we do not guarantee that any rule, draft or reviewed, or any answer is accurate, complete or current.

Rule feedback. You can report a rule that you think is wrong. A change you ask for (turning the rule off for you, a different restriction, or limiting it to some products) applies right away to your own account, client workspace or Shopify store until you undo it, and the decision is yours. We review reports; we may change the rule for everyone, or decline to. Reports from our website without an account are reviewed only and change nothing on their own. Don't include your customers' personal data in a report.

Gaps and timing. Laws change, and there is a delay between a change and our update. Some jurisdictions or product groups are marked "not checked" or are outside our coverage. A "not checked" answer, or no answer, does not mean a sale is allowed. We do not cover local (city or county) law unless we say so, and we do not cover every carrier or every license type.

You remain responsible for compliance. You decide what to sell, where to ship it and to whom, including whether to rely on draft rules, to use reviewed rules only, or to adjust a rule for your own store. You are responsible for following every law, regulation and carrier rule that applies to your sales, including age verification, licensing, taxes, labeling and hazmat packaging. Check anything important with a qualified lawyer.

2. Accounts and API keys

You sign up with an email address or Google sign-in. Give us an email address you control and keep it current; we send sign-in links, billing notices and, if you ask for them, law-change alerts there.

One account is for one person or one company. Don't share an account between unrelated businesses, and don't open several accounts to get around plan limits.

Keep your API keys secret. A key is shown once when you create it. Don't put keys in public code, browser-side scripts or app bundles. You are responsible for all use of your keys until you revoke them. If you think a key has leaked, rotate or revoke it from your account page right away.

Test keys (starting lts_test_) return fictional fixture data only. Never rely on a test-key response for a real order.

3. Acceptable use

You may use the Service to check your own products and orders, and to show the results to your own customers in your store, cart or checkout. You may not:

4. Protecting our database

The text of statutes and regulations is public law, and you are free to read and use it from official sources. What we build on top of it is ours: our selection of laws, how we structure them into rules, product categories and classifications, conditions, effects, summaries, citations mapping, and the compilation as a whole (the "State Law Check Data"). We own the State Law Check Data and protect it under copyright, database, contract and trade secret law where available.

You may not, directly or through anyone else:

Our law pages, summaries and explanations are original works, separate from the public law they describe. We may include identifying features in them so that copies can be recognized.

Keeping records of the checks you ran for your own orders is fine. If you want broader rights, such as a data license, ask us at support@statelawcheck.com.

5. Usage limits and fair use

Each plan has a monthly request quota and a per-second rate limit, shown in the API docs and on your account page. Requests over the limit are refused with HTTP 429. Quotas reset monthly and unused requests do not carry over. Our website and sign-up forms also have per-IP and per-address limits to prevent abuse.

Even within your quota, we may slow or block traffic that harms the Service or other users, or that looks like the extraction described in section 4.

6. Fees, plans and billing

API plans. The free plan costs nothing and has the limits shown in the docs. Paid plans are billed in advance by subscription through Stripe, at the price shown when you subscribe. Where a plan includes metered or usage-based charges, they are billed in arrears for the usage recorded in each billing period. Prices are in US dollars and exclude taxes, which you pay where they apply.

Cancellation. You can cancel a paid plan at any time from your account dashboard. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period, and your keys return to the free plan. Fees already paid are not refunded except where the law requires.

Shopify app. If you use the Shopify app, Shopify bills you for it on our behalf under Shopify's billing terms, and you manage or cancel that subscription in your Shopify admin. Free trials, if offered, end automatically and paid billing starts unless you cancel first.

We may change prices for future billing periods. We will give you at least 30 days' notice by email before a price increase applies to you.

If a payment fails, we may move your account to the free plan or suspend paid features until it is resolved.

7. AI classification

On paid plans, when our own rules can't confidently classify a product, we may send the product's listing text to an AI model provider to help classify it. AI classifications can be wrong. Products with low confidence are marked for your review, and you are responsible for confirming how your products are classified. See our Privacy Policy for what is shared.

8. Your data

You keep ownership of the data you send us, such as product details and order destinations. You give us permission to use it to run, secure and improve the Service, as described in our Privacy Policy. Don't send us personal data we don't need, such as your customers' names or full street addresses; a ZIP code or state is enough.

9. Suspension and termination

You can stop using the Service at any time, revoke your keys, uninstall the Shopify app, or ask us to delete your account.

We may suspend or terminate your access, or revoke keys, if you break these terms, if your use creates risk or legal exposure for us or others, if payment fails, or if we stop offering the Service. Where reasonable we will tell you first and give you a chance to fix the problem. Sections 1, 4, 10, 11, 12 and 14 survive termination.

10. Disclaimers

THE SERVICE AND ALL INFORMATION IN IT ARE PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE". TO THE FULLEST EXTENT THE LAW ALLOWS, WE DISCLAIM ALL WARRANTIES, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, TITLE, NON-INFRINGEMENT AND ACCURACY. WE DO NOT WARRANT THAT ANY INFORMATION IS COMPLETE, CORRECT OR CURRENT, THAT ANY SHIPMENT IS LEGAL, OR THAT THE SERVICE WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED OR ERROR-FREE.

11. Limitation of liability

TO THE FULLEST EXTENT THE LAW ALLOWS, WE ARE NOT LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, EXEMPLARY OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR FOR LOST PROFITS, REVENUE, DATA OR GOODWILL, OR FOR FINES, PENALTIES, SEIZURES, CHARGEBACKS OR CARRIER ACTIONS, ARISING FROM OR RELATED TO THE SERVICE, EVEN IF WE WERE TOLD THEY WERE POSSIBLE.

OUR TOTAL LIABILITY FOR ALL CLAIMS ARISING FROM OR RELATED TO THE SERVICE OR THESE TERMS IS LIMITED TO THE GREATER OF (A) THE AMOUNT YOU PAID US FOR THE SERVICE IN THE 12 MONTHS BEFORE THE EVENT GIVING RISE TO THE CLAIM AND (B) US $100.

Some jurisdictions don't allow certain exclusions or limits, so some of the above may not apply to you.

12. Indemnity

You will defend, indemnify and hold us harmless from any claim, loss, fine, penalty or expense (including reasonable legal fees) arising from your products, your sales and shipments, your compliance or non-compliance with any law or carrier rule, your use of the Service, or your breach of these terms.

13. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. We will post the new version on this page with a new date, and email account holders about material changes at least 14 days before they take effect. If you keep using the Service after that, the new terms apply. If you don't agree, stop using the Service and cancel your plan.

14. Governing law and disputes

These terms are governed by the laws of the state where we have our principal place of business, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules. Before filing any claim, contact us and give us 30 days to try to resolve it informally. Any claim must be brought in the state or federal courts located there, and you and we consent to their jurisdiction. Claims must be brought individually, not as part of a class or representative action.

15. General

These terms and the Privacy Policy are the whole agreement between you and us about the Service. If any part is unenforceable, the rest still applies. Not enforcing a term is not a waiver. You may not transfer these terms without our consent; we may transfer them with the business.
